Introduction
Since the recent coronavirus pandemic, our organizations are encouraging us to work from home. It is a wise decision, but it is also taking a toll on IT people, as many people use a VPN to access network folders, which makes accessing files a slow process. In some cases, the connection is lost.
Very few organizations may have prepared themselves if 80 or 90% of their employees can work from home and use VPN to work.
I got a request asking if I could move 40 GB of data from network drives to SharePoint, so that files and folders related to my Business unit can be accessed remotely. I gathered all the resources, although I prefer ShareGate for SharePoint migration. However, we need licence for it and I used my free trial, so I decided to explore and use the SharePoint Migration Tool, which is free of cost.
Pre-requisites
One needs to have access to Source (in this case it is Network drive) and destination (SharePoint).
Please review storage metrics of site collection - https://<<Site collection URL>> _layouts/15/storman.aspx, you should have enough space allocation.
In our case, we have 2.56 TB of space allocated.
The above link has all the information about how to use the SharePoint Migration Tool. The link is there to download and install it.
Steps to Migrate files from File Server to SharePoint
After installing the SharePoint Migration tool, open the tool. It will ask for login details.
Once you are logged in, click on Start new migration. I have been using this tool for a month now, this is the reason it is showing another option.
After clicking Start new migration, it asks for content (Source), I am using File Share.
Select the Source as shown below.
If you have multiple sources and targets, you can use JSON or CSV file for bulk migration.
Put in the destination URL, destination URL could only be Site collection or SharePoint web site URL
Select document library, or click the arrow to migrate data in a specific folder.
Click on Next.
There are a lot of settings we have to explore, but my requirements mean I don't need to click any of these.
Migrate File version history is selected by default.
Click on Migrate
If you want to map users, you can configure user mapping by following instructions in this
link.
Click save and wait for Migration to complete.
Once migration is complete, you can click View reports to view Summary and FailureSumary report.
