Start Workflow in SharePoint 2013 And Office 365 Using Nintex Workflows

Welcome to an article on how to Start/Initiate workflow in SharePoint 2013 and Office 365 using Nintex Workflows. This article will display the action “Start Workflow” and how to configure it.

Using this action you can start or initiate workflows and here we will see the configuration part of the workflow. Let’s see the implementation of this functionality.

• Create a list, Dev Testing.
  
  
• Click on the LIST tab on the Top ribbon and click on Nintex Workflows.
  
  
  
  
• You will see the following screen, to create a new workflow.
  
  
• Click on “Create new workflow”.
  
  
  
  
• You will come to the design phase of the Nintex workflows.
  
  
• Add the action, “Start workflow” either by right click on the workflow or by dragging and dropping from the left toolbox.
  
  
  
  
• Now let’s configure it.
  
  
• When you double click on the action the following screen opens up.
  
  
  
  
  
  

Form Parameters:

• Destination Site Url: Provide the url of the site where you want to run the workflow.
  
• Workflow Type: What type of workflow is it as in Site Workflow or List Workflow.
  
• Workflow Name: Provide the name of the workflow you are running.
  
• Item ID or GUID: Here you can specify the ID or GUID of the item or document if you want to run an instance on them.
  
• SharePoint URL: Provide the domain Url of the site.
  
• Username: Provide the username of the user having complete access on the list/library and on the workflow.
  
• Password: Provide the password.
  
• Workflow start successful: Store this value in a variable which will state whether the workflow start was successful or not.
  
• Workflow Instance ID: Store this value in a variable which will store the workflow instance ID.
  
  
• Now we have configured our workflow, let’s go and publish it to use it.
  
  
• Click on Publish on the left corner of the ribbon of Nintex Designer.

• Give your workflow a name.
  
  
• Description
  
  
• Choose your task list where it should store the tasks, It will be Workflow Tasks by default.
  
  
• Choose your history list where it should store the history logs, It will be Workflow History by default.
  
  
• Start Options:
  
  
  - You can either start your workflow manually.
  - Or you can start your workflow automatically when an item is created. In our case we will make it as Start when items are created.
  - Or you can start your workflow automatically when an item is modified.
  
  
• Click on Publish.
  
  
• Your workflow will get published.

The values which you received and store in the variables can be updated to a list item so when you run this workflow, it will create a new item with all the values of the variables updated on the list as an item.

This action can be used on scenarios when you want to trigger a workflow when some event change is happening. This workflow can be ran under inter sites hence giving we developers more freedom for developing step wise functional approach.
