Nvidia Launches Cosmos AI Models

Cosmos AI by Nvidia

At CES 2025, Nvidia introduced its new world models called the Cosmos World Foundation Models (Cosmos WFMs). These models are advanced AI systems that can predict and generate realistic videos based on the laws of physics. Nvidia is offering these models to developers and researchers for free, allowing them to use them for commercial purposes as well.

The Cosmos WFMs come in different versions, depending on the needs of the user. The models are categorized into three types: Nano for quick, real-time applications, Super for high-performance tasks, and Ultra for the highest-quality output. These models have between 4 billion and 14 billion parameters, which determine how well they perform—more parameters mean better performance.

One exciting feature of Cosmos WFMs is their ability to generate synthetic data for various uses, like helping to train robots and autonomous vehicles. Nvidia also offers additional tools, such as a video decoder for augmented reality and models that ensure responsible use.

These models were trained on vast amounts of real-world data, including human interactions and footage from environments like factories and roads. This training allows the models to simulate realistic settings, making them useful for industries like robotics, transportation, and gaming.

While Nvidia hasn’t fully shared the details about the data used for training, they emphasize that Cosmos is designed to simulate how the world works rather than copying specific works or violating copyrights.

Nvidia’s new models are already being tested by companies like Uber, who are using them to develop safer, scalable autonomous driving technology. However, it’s important to note that while Nvidia calls these models “open,” they are not fully open-source because they don’t provide enough information to recreate them from scratch.

Nvidia hopes that Cosmos will revolutionize AI development in industries like robotics and self-driving cars, just as other AI models have done in enterprise applications.
