The U.S. is preparing to host a Global AI Safety Summit on November 20-21, 2024, in San Francisco, aimed at fostering international collaboration on artificial intelligence safety. This summit will be the inaugural gathering of the International Network of AI Safety Institutes, which was established during the AI Seoul Summit in May 2024. Key leaders, including Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, will oversee the discussions, bringing together experts from various countries, including the U.S., UK, Japan, Canada, and members of the European Union.
The summit aims to address several critical issues surrounding AI safety, particularly as generative AI technologies have raised concerns about job displacement, electoral interference, and potential risks to human control over these systems. The focus will be on sharing insights and enhancing cooperation among member nations to develop standardized safety protocols and methodologies for AI systems.
In preparation for this summit, the Biden administration has emphasized the importance of establishing rules that prioritize safety, security, and trust in AI development. This initiative follows President Biden's executive order from October 2023, which mandates that developers of high-risk AI systems submit safety test results to the government prior to public release.
Additionally, the Commerce Department has proposed stringent reporting requirements for advanced AI developers to ensure resilience against cyber threats. The summit is seen as a crucial step in addressing the global challenges posed by rapidly evolving AI technologies and is expected to lay the groundwork for further discussions at an upcoming AI Action Summit scheduled for February 2025 in Paris.
