ChatGPT Integration with Apple Intelligence

Apple has officially rolled out its latest updates—iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2—giving developers their first look at the integration of ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence. This new feature comes alongside a suite of other capabilities, including Genmoji, Image Playground, Visual Intelligence, and Image Wand.

Public access to Apple Intelligence features such as integrated writing tools, image cleanup, article summaries, and a revamped Siri experience were introduced with the earlier iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS 15.1 updates. However, users will need to wait for future releases to fully utilize OpenAI's platform.

To use these features, users must opt into both Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT during setup or later in their settings. Notably, there's no requirement for a ChatGPT account or standalone app; however, users without a premium account will face limitations on the number of queries they can make. All users will have access to OpenAI’s models, including GPT-4.

The integration serves two main purposes: enhancing Siri’s knowledge base and generating text within Writing Tools. When enabled, certain queries may prompt Siri to seek user approval to access ChatGPT. For instance, questions about recipes or travel planning could trigger this option. Users can also directly instruct Siri to “ask ChatGPT.”

Another key feature is Compose, which allows users to generate text based on prompts in any application that supports the new Writing Tools feature. This capability complements existing tools like Style and Summary.

Additionally, the integration provides access to OpenAI’s image generation capabilities alongside Apple’s new Image Playground feature, enabling users to create images with prompts in various styles. Genmoji offers similar functionality for emojis within the Messages app.

As early adopters begin exploring these new features, it will be interesting to see their feedback on the integration's performance and usability.
