Job Description

As an Engineering Manager, you’ll be at the forefront of driving technical excellence in Generative AI, managing teams working on Large Language Models (LLMs) and Multi-Modal AI, and collaborating with senior technical leaders to bring innovative ideas to life. Your role will involve managing technical projects, building systems at scale, and shaping Google's AI strategy to disrupt industries and solve complex problems.

Responsibilities

  1. Team Leadership. Manage and develop a talented team of engineers working on complex, cross-disciplinary AI projects. Provide coaching, feedback, and mentorship to promote growth, high performance, and career development.
  2. Technical Excellence. Oversee the design, implementation, and delivery of scalable Generative AI systems and architectures. Ensure quality coding practices, efficient design, and optimal performance across projects.
  3. Collaborative Innovation. Work closely with OCTO Principal Engineers, Technical Directors, Google Product/Engineering teams, and strategic customers to identify and refine market-disrupting opportunities in AI and related fields.
  4. Strategic Impact. Leverage deep technical expertise to drive AI innovation, guide experimental thinking, and lead the team through technical challenges. Help define the roadmap and vision for AI solutions that address real-world business problems.
  5. People Development. Set clear expectations for the team aligned with organizational goals. Conduct regular performance reviews, feedback sessions, and career development planning for each team member.
  6. Cross-Functional Collaboration. Act as a bridge between technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring alignment on AI initiatives and contributing to the development of new AI-driven solutions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in software development with proficiency in one or more programming languages (Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript).
  • 3+ years of experience in a technical leadership role overseeing projects and teams, including people management experience (2+ years).
  • Extensive experience with machine learning algorithms and tools (e.g., TensorFlow), artificial intelligence, deep learning, and natural language processing (NLP).
  • Demonstrated experience in Generative AI (Large Language Models, Multi-Modal).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 3+ years working in a complex, matrixed organization, ideally with experience in a fast-paced environment (startup or scale-up).
  • Expertise in cloud technologies (Google Cloud, AWS, Azure) and experience in AI-focused cloud architecture.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and experience working in ambiguous environments, transforming loose ideas into actionable technical solutions.
  • Knowledge of AI platforms and infrastructure design, leveraging cloud-native AI tools and services.
