Create a content type using SharePoint 2010 UI

What is Content Type?

A content type is a reusable collection of settings that you want to apply to a certain category of content. Content types enable you to manage the metadata and behavior of a document, item, or folder in a centralized, reusable way.

Content Type Creation?

You can create a column and content type in three ways.

  • 1. User Interface
  • 2. Object Model
  • 3. Features

Types of Content Type?

There are two types of content types is available in SharePoint

  • 1. Site Content Type
  • 2. List Content Type

· Site Content Type

When you create a new content type ad add it to a site collection of content type is called site content type.

· List Content Type

When you add a site content type to a list. SP makes a copy of site content type and adds a copy to the list is called list content type.

What is Content type hub?

which allows the centralization and sharing of Content Types through the Metadata Service Application.

Creating Content Type using User Interface (UI)

Step1: Create a list or library using more option from site setting and select a template and provide a name for that and click create.


Step2: once the library has created, conform whether content type is enabled for the library, to check go to library setting which is in ribbon then click advance setting under general setting .


Step3: enable allow management of content type then hit ok


Step4: once you hit ok the content type will enable for the particular list or library.

Step5: Now create content type by using site content, go to site action – site setting choose site content type under galleries.


Step6: Click create new button and give a name and description for the content type


Note: Here should give the unique name, description and choose the correct parent content type and content type from, then place in the existing group.

Step7: Then you can see the below window once you clicked ok, then click advance setting for bind the content type


Step8: Here you can bind the template and click ok.


Note: we can create the number of column for the metadata purpose, to create column follow step9 else go to step10.

Step9: Can create a column by using add form new site column and give a name and data types

Step10: Now associate the content type to the list or library


Step11: click add from existing site content type then you can find the bellow screen


Step12: Choose the content type from where you placed your content type and choose the content type and associate that with list or library.

Step13: then go the particular list or library, click document tab from library tool which is in top ribbon, click new Document here you can see you content type.
