Tech Reset: Are You Future-Ready?

While the tech industry was once seen as a stable source of employment, significant restructuring has shaken its image of being a safe haven. In 2023, over 262,000 tech workers in the US lost their jobs, and the trend appears to be continuing in 2024. Data suggests that the rate of layoffs might even be increasing, with over 50,000 employees laid off in the first two months. Several tech giants implemented workforce reductions. Amazon (4,000), Sony (1,200 in PlayStation Studios), Cisco (2,500), Expedia (300), Paramount (100), Grammarly (50), Instacart (200), and Mozilla (100) faced layoffs.

Future ready developer

With the rise of AI, I see there are a lot more layoffs coming in the software field. Low-code, no-code platforms, and AI tools such as Github Copilot and ChatGPT, are helping engineers and developers to become more productive and build software at a faster pace.

Does that mean AI will take your jobs? Not really. If you are smart, you could use AI for your benefit.

So, what can you do to separate yourself from the crowd? From my personal experience, here are some of the things you can do.

Invest in continuous learning.

Upskill or reskill yourself by taking online courses, attending workshops, or pursuing certifications relevant to your field. If you are just doing what you are told to do, you will be the first one to go.

Learn the latest trends and technologies.

Follow industry publications and attend relevant events to keep yourself updated on the latest trends and technologies. This demonstrates your passion for continuous learning and adaptability.

Follow C# Corner, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Follow accounts you are interested in and read tech media publications.

Participate and engage.

Many developers work as work. They do what they are supposed to do and what they are assigned to do.

My suggestion is, to get understand business and business needs. Get involved in your client meetings, understand their needs, provide solutions, and engage. Take a lead and don't just sit around and wait for others to tell you what to do.

Become a thought leader.

Today, you are not just a developer in the company. You present your company everywhere from your social media to your local community. Businesses love thought leaders.

Not only just learn new skills and technologies but also share them with others. Speak about them at local user groups, within your organization, at college and tech events, and podcasts. Thought leaders don’t need to look for a job but jobs come to them.

Write articles and blogs and share them on platforms like C# Corner and LinkedIn. Solve people’s problems by answering forum questions.

This will make you invaluable and indispensable.

Build leadership and communication skills.

Many engineers and developers lack leadership and communication skills. Businesses are now looking for more than just code monkeys. Businesses are looking for problem solvers and leaders who can add value to the business growth. Ask yourself, how are you helping your business grow? Are you adding value to the company? Are you making your team and boss's life easier?

Mentorship and help others.

Leaders love people who help others, including mentorship. Go outside of your scope of work and see who else you can help.

Bring a positive attitude and positivity

A positive attitude and showing passion and enthusiasm about work will take you far. This is something that can separate you from others. No one wants to be around negative and miserable people.

Build and grow your professional network.

Network consistently: Building relationships and staying active in your network is an ongoing process. Don't wait until you're actively searching for a job to start connecting with people.

Summary

Remember, standing out in a tough job market requires a multi-pronged approach. By actively developing your skills, staying informed, and networking strategically, you can increase your visibility and position yourself for success in the competitive landscape.
