On October 22, 2018, Microsoft officially released the RTM version of SharePoint Server 2019. One of the great improvements in SharePoint Server 2019 is the Modern List/Library. There are many configuration options that as a user I want to use to configure and organize my data. With the change of look and feel, it is a little tough to reach the Library Settings page in the modern experience. Today, I am going to help the users find the Library Settings option in Modern Library.
If you move from SharePoint 2013 or SharePoint 2016 Classic experience to SharePoint 2019 Modern experience, the user must be still using the classic version of List/Library and using the ribbon option on the library page. But in the modern experience, we don’t have ribbon anymore so it is kind of confusing for them to find the Library Settings option.
There are a couple of ways in which we can go to the Library Settings page in modern lists/libraries.
Option # 1
Please follow the steps below to get this.
- Open the Document Library in the browser.
- Click on the Setting gear [On the top-right-hand side of the page] and click on "Library Settings".
- Here, we will see the Library Settings.
Option # 2
Another option is to use the Site Content option. Follow the below steps to reach the Library Settings.
- Open the Site Collection in the browser.
- Click on the Settings gear [On the top-right side of the page] and click on "Site Content".
- Or click on the Site Contents link on the Quick Launch Bar.
- On the "Site Content" page, please hover the mouse on the library.
- Click on the ellipsis (3 dots) and click "Settings".
- Now, you are on the "Library Settings" page.
Option # 3
The third way is, simply, to move back to the Classic experience and get the Library Settings page.
- Open the document library in the browser.
- On the bottom left, click on "Return to classic SharePoint" experience.
- On this page, you can click on Library Settings via Ribbon.
Option # 4
You can also use the direct URL for the Library Settings page, you can do it using the _layouts /Listedit.aspx page.
Troubleshooting
Sometimes, you notice that you are in the Modern experience but you are not seeing the gear option / Library Settings option on the top right side of the library page. There are a couple of reasons why the Library Setting option is missing from the gear option.
- Make sure the logged-in user has proper permission. If it has only read permission, then it can’t see those options.
- If the user has proper permission but is still not able to see it.
- Try to clear the browser cache, close the browser reopen it, and test it.
- In some cases, if you have Kerberos authentication enabled in your On-prem farm, then clear the Kerberos tickets by running the “Klist purge” command in the cmd line. Or you can reboot the machine.
- Try in a different browser or even sometimes, try with a different machine.
This post applies to both, SharePoint Online as well as SharePoint Server 2019, with Modern experience enabled List and Libraries.
Hope this helped! Keep enjoying and exploring the SharePoint. Your feedback is always welcome.
