![Polygon]()
Polygon is one of the most popular blockchain networks today, known for its low fees, fast transactions, and scalability. If you’re exploring Web3 or planning to interact with dApps (decentralized apps), setting up a Polygon wallet is your first step.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to get started—from choosing a wallet to sending your first transaction.
What is a Polygon Wallet?
A Polygon wallet is a digital wallet that lets you store, send, and receive tokens (like MATIC) on the Polygon blockchain. It also lets you connect to dApps like games, DeFi platforms, NFT marketplaces, and more.
What You’ll Need
- A computer or smartphone
- A browser (Chrome or Firefox is best)
- 10 minutes of your time
- (Optional) Some MATIC tokens for gas fees
Step 1. Choose a Wallet That Supports Polygon.
The most popular and easy-to-use wallet is MetaMask.
Even though MetaMask is built for Ethereum, you can add Polygon manually (we’ll show you how). Other options include:
- Trust Wallet (mobile)
- Rabby Wallet
- Coinbase Wallet
- OKX Wallet
We’ll use MetaMask in this guide since it’s beginner-friendly and works across most dApps.
Step 2. Install MetaMask.
- Go to https://metamask.io
- Click Download and choose your browser
- Click Add to Chrome or your browser of choice
- After installation, MetaMask will open in a new tab
Step 3. Create Your Wallet.
- Click Create a Wallet
- Set a strong password (write it down!)
- You’ll see a Secret Recovery Phrase – SAVE THIS in a secure place (not online)
- Confirm the recovery phrase when asked
Why is this important?
If you lose your recovery phrase, you can’t recover your wallet or your funds.
Step 4. Add Polygon Network to MetaMask.
MetaMask only comes with Ethereum by default. Let’s add the Polygon (Matic) network.
Option 1. Add it manually
Click the MetaMask icon → Click your account icon → Settings → Networks → Add Network
Use these details.
Click Save.
Option 2. Add it automatically
Go to https://chainlist.org → Search Polygon Mainnet → Click Connect Wallet → Add to MetaMask.
Step 5. Add Funds to Your Wallet.
You’ll need some MATIC tokens to pay gas fees on the Polygon network.
You can get MATIC by,
- Buying on exchanges like Coinbase, Binance, or Polygon's faucet
- Receiving from a friend
- Bridging from Ethereum using tools like Polygon Bridge
Once you have MATIC, send it to your MetaMask wallet address.
Step 6. Test Your Wallet.
Here’s a simple test.
- Go to https://wallet.polygon.technology
- Connect MetaMask
- View your wallet dashboard
- Try sending a tiny amount of MATIC to a friend or your second wallet
Step 7. Start Exploring dApps.
Now your wallet is ready to use with any Polygon-based dApp! Here are a few cool ones to try:
- Aavegotchi: A pixel NFT game
- QuickSwap: Swap tokens fast with low fees
- OpenSea: Buy NFTs on the Polygon network
- Lens Protocol: Web3 social network
