Today, I am writing another article on the New SharePoint Admin Center experience for SharePoint admins in office 365. The new admin center is still in Preview, so if you're already configured to use the Modern admin center then you can get it or click on the banner and try modern admin center.
As the SharePoint admin center is gradually releasing around the globe, features/options you are seeing in the admin center depend upon the Office 365 Tenant Release options settings. This means that you may not yet see some features or they may look different.
Note
The product team is still pushing more stuff into the New Admin Center and maybe when you visit the Admin Center more options may be already available.
Today, we will explore the options that are available under the settings category as of today. The SharePoint product team is working on the Modern admin center and they will add more options in it on later days.
Let’s explore it.
- Browse the SharePoint admin center and log in with SharePoint Tenant Admin credentials.
- Sign in to Office 365 as a global admin or SharePoint admin.
Select the app launcher icon
in the upper-left and choose Admin to open the Microsoft 365 admin center. (If you don’t see the Admin tile, you don’t have Office 365 administrator permissions in your organization.)
- If your settings are configured to use classic admin center then you will get this page. Click on "Try it now" in the banner.
- Or it will open the Modern SharePoint admin center.
- Click on the "Settings" link on the left-hand side quick launch bar, a new settings page will open.
On this page, we will see the following options.
- Lists & libraries: Use the new or classic experience
- Notifications: Let users get device notifications about file activity and news
- Site storage limits: Manage site storage automatically or set specific storage limits
- Default admin experience: Open the new or classic SharePoint admin center by default
- Site creation: Set default settings for creating a new site.
Lists & libraries
In these options, we can control if new or classic list & libraries experience is a default option in this tenant.
Microsoft recommends using the new Modern experience by default as it is simpler, responsive, and fast to load. Modern experience brings many new features, i.e., Pin document to the top, conditional formatting, Filters pane, stay on the same page, Flow and PowerApps integration, and modern sharing experience.
To control these settings,
Notifications
This option is for configuration of the Push Notification for the SharePoint content on mobile apps. If this option is enabled, the user will get the notifications on their mobile apps about the update of SharePoint content.
- On the Settings page.
- Click on notification
- A new notification settings page will pop-up,
- On this page click ON (if it is disabled or turn off if you want to disable it) under “Allow notifications”
- Click save
Site storage limits
We can manage the storage of our site collection either automatic or manual, by default a new tenant is set to automatic and use the storage space from the available central pool. It is nice functionality that we don’t need to manage the quota at the site collection level but some time it is not good. In a scenario where automatic storage management enabled, months later you come to know that your central pool is running out of the space (there are many reasons, users are in habit never delete the old / unused stuff or etc). Please plan it accordingly as if you are out of storage space then you have to pay for extra space.
Please follow the below steps to manage site storage limits.
Default admin experience
This options will give us the power to enable the default experience for the SharePoint admin center to modern/new or classic/old. Even though, you enable the New Admin center experience but admins still can use the old SharePoint Admin center.
Please follow the below steps to change the Default admin experience.
- On the Settings page.
- Click on Default admin experience
- On this page, under “Open the new SharePoint admin center by default” turn it On or Off as per your requirement.
- Click Save.
Site creation
In this options, we can manage the site creations process, whether we allowed users to create the new site collection & under a Sites / Teams managed path or we don’t allow the users to create the new site collections.
Please follow the below steps to manage this options.
This concludes the article. Thank you for your time reading this. Please feel free to contact me for any questions related to this article. Till then, keep SharePointing.
