New Name of Azure Active Directory

Microsoft Entra ID

Azure Active Directory (Azure AD), Microsoft’s cloud-based identity and access management service, has been renamed Microsoft Entra ID. This change is part of the Microsoft Entra product family’s unification and expansion, which helps you protect all identities and secure network access everywhere.

What is the significance of the name change?

The new name reflects the product’s multi-cloud and multiplatform functionality, which allows us to manage and secure identities across multiple clouds, devices, and platforms. It also clarifies the situation with the on-premises identity solution (Active Directory), unaffected by this change. Furthermore, it paves the way for Microsoft Entra to deliver a more straightforward way to protect every identity and secure every access point as it expands to include more products and capabilities.

What are the names of the new features?

The product’s features and capabilities remain unchanged due to the name change. Some features, however, are now labeled as Microsoft Entra product family features rather than Azure AD features. As an example:

  • Azure AD Conditional Access is now available. Conditional Access with Microsoft Entra.
  • Azure AD single sign-on is now available. Single sign-on with Microsoft Entra.

What should I do?

If you use Azure AD or have previously deployed it in your organization, you can continue using it as usual. All existing deployments, configurations, and integrations usually function without your intervention.

We can continue to access familiar Azure AD capabilities via the Azure portal, Microsoft 365 admin center, and Microsoft Entra admin center.

The product name and icons are changing, and we anticipate that most naming text string changes in Microsoft and partner experiences will be completed by the end of 2023.
