What is Copilot for Word?
Copilot, Microsoft’s generative AI assistant, is a flexible LLM-powered app designed to enhance your Word content and documents. It can:
- Draft new content based on conversational prompts.
- Rewrite existing content.
- Transform text into tables.
- Summarize content.
- Offer suggestions to improve your writing.
Getting Started with Copilot
Accessing Copilot in Word
- Using the Ribbon: Load Word and click the Copilot icon in the top ribbon. This opens a dedicated panel for prompts.
- Right-Click Context Menu: Right-click in your document to find the “Activate” Copilot option.
- Shortcut Keys: Use the Windows + C keys to quickly open Copilot in Word.

Once activated, you can interact with Copilot to enhance your document workflows, including drafting, rewriting, summarizing, and more.
Initial Features
Use Copilot in Word to draft your first document, spark new ideas, or expand on your existing work. Here are three ways to get started with Copilot in Word:
When you open a new document, a prompt window appears automatically. This window lets you input information and attach documents to guide your draft.
Ask
We interact with Copilot in Word not only through text input but also by voice. By clicking the microphone icon in the Copilot window, you can speak directly to Copilot and get it to assist you verbally!
For example, I am drafting a leave letter in Word to submit to my employer.
Catch Up
Are you short on time or dealing with a lengthy document? Copilot in Word can quickly summarize it for you!
Just click the Copilot button in the top-right corner and select "Summarize this doc." Copilot generates a real-time summary, which you can refine by asking questions or using suggested prompts like “Add more details” or “Make it more formal.” Remember, the summary is based on the document’s content, keeping you in control!
And, of course, you're in control! If you want the summary to expand on a key point, just ask. Simply prompt, “Tell me more about…” and let Copilot in Word do the rest!
