How To Create A Dashboard In Power BI

Introduction

A dashboard is also known as a canvas; in Power BI it is a single page that contains the highlights of the story through visualization. I hope you already read the article, in which I covered all the fundamentals.

Here in this article you will learn how to create dashboard in Power bi in detail.

The relationship between dashboards and reports

Dashboard is a feature of Power bi services, not a Power bi desktop while you can create a report.

• Dashboards tend to be succinct and summary-like. Reports are typically longer and more detailed, but they may have summary components.
• Dashboards are more visual and use a number of types of graphs. Reports appear to be primarily tabular, although additional charts or chart elements can be included.
• Main Performance Metrics tend to concentrate on dashboards (KPIs). Reports appear to concentrate on underlying facts.
• At a glance, dashboards are supposed to be tracked. More in depth attention is required from reports (i.e., you should read through)
• Dashboards convey basic points. A story is revealed, or possibly told, through reports. Dashboards are clear. In nature, reports appear to be more nuanced.

How to open Editing view in the report editor

Have you created your report in Power bi desktop and published it? If not, then see my article ‘https://www.c-sharpcorner.com/article/how-to-share-power-bi-report/’. If yes, then you have logged in on power bi services. Now if you want to edit your report then you need not to go to power bi desktop back. You can edit your report in power bi services.

Open your report by click on ‘Report’ to expand it and see all your report inside the ‘My Workspace’.

I have two reports ‘Company’ and ‘Employee’. I want to open ‘Employee.pbix’.

To edit this report, click on ‘Edit’ at top of the report.

How to pin the Report into the Dashboard

I have shown you how to create a new dashboard in my previous article (link mentioned in the top). Now I am showing you how to pin the report in existing dashboard or a new one. To do this open your report that you want to pin, in editor like above step. To pin this report, click on ‘Pin to dashboard’ button.

Once you click on this button a new window will be opened. Here you can choose existing dashboard or you can create a new one. I am using my existing dashboard.

Click on ‘Pin live’.

How to Pin Tiles

Go to ‘My workspace’ and click on ‘New’ to create a new Dashboard.

New dashboard has been created.To add tile into this dashboard, click on ‘Edit’ and ‘add tile’.

You can add ‘Web content’, ’Image’, ’text box’, ‘video’ and ‘real time data’ as a tile into the Dashboard. Here I am going to show you how to add image. Select ‘Image’ option and click next.

Note

Image address should have ‘https:’ or ‘http:’. Click on ‘Apply’ to pin this image on dashboard.

Similarly, you can add video on dashboard. Select video option and click ‘Next’.

Provide title and subtitle (optional) and video path. I am using you tube video.

Click on ‘Apply’. Now your Dashboard will be seen like the below image.
