Deploying IP Address Management (IPAM) in Azure

Introduction

The IP Address Management (IPAM) in Azure is used to plan, track, and manage private IP addresses used in your Azure infrastructure. It ensures you efficiently use your address space, avoid conflicts, and meet organizational requirements.

Azure does not have a native, full-fledged IPAM service like Windows Server IPAM, but it provides tools and features for managing IP addresses within virtual networks (VNets).

To deploy the IPAM, you must have a Virtual Network Manager; if you don’t have one, you can create a Virtual Network Manager and continue the deployment.

Step 1. Search for the Network Manager in the Global search bar and select the correct Network Manager.

Step 2. Navigate to IP Address Management, then choose IP Address Pools, and click + Create to add a new pool.

Step 3. Enter a name for the IP address pool and click Next.

Step 4. Select IPv4 as the IP address type for the pool, enter the IP address range, and click Create.

Step 5. When creating a Virtual Network, first enter the Basic and Security details. Then navigate to the IP Addresses tab, select Allocate using IP address pools, click Select an IP address pool, choose the desired IP pool, and click Save.

Step 6. We can see that the IP pool has been selected, and this pool will automatically assign IP addresses to the Virtual Network.

Step 7. Once the Virtual Network is created, navigate to the Subnets and check the IPAM pool and the address.

Summary

When creating a Virtual Network Manager, you need to add multiple IP pools. Only then will the Virtual Network gateway be able to pick IP addresses from these pools.
