Copilot+PC Hardware Available, as of May 2024

Abstract

As of May 2024, there is a new trend in Microsoft’s approach to personal computers, with the new proclaimed standard for PC hardware called Copilot+PC. Here is a brief overview of compatible hardware available on the market in the present or near future. Here is the summary.

ARM-based architecture

Right now, requirements can only be met by a single chip in the Windows PC ecosystem, Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus. Based on [1], here are the announced Copilot+PC compatible products.

  • Microsoft Surface Pro and Laptop: You can preorder the Surface Pro at a starting price of $999.
  • The Surface Laptop comes in two configurations: 13.8 and 15 inches, with memory options starting at 16GM of RAM and 256GB of storage, and the same LCD panel as previous years. You can pick up the Surface Laptop for as low as $999.
  • Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x and ThinkPad T14s Gen 6: The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x will go on sale starting in June, with an expected starting price of $1,199, while the ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 will launch around the same time with a starting price of $1,699
  • HP OmniBook X and EliteBook Ultra: The OmniBook X and EliteBook Ultra are available for preorders for starting prices of $1,199 (up to 2TB of storage and 32GB of RAM) and $1,699 (512GB of storage with 16GB of RAM), respectively
  • Dell XPS 13, Latitude 7455: The XPS 13 is available for preorder today at a starting price of $1,299, while the Latitude 7455 will launch later this year, with the price still to be confirmed.
  • Acer Swift 14 AI: The Acer Swift 14 AI will first be available in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia in June, and eventually be sold in North America in July, with a starting price of $1,099.
  • Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Edge: The 14-inch Galaxy Book 4 Edge will start at $1,349, while the 16-inch size will start at $1,749 with 1TB of storage.
  • Asus Vivobook S 15: The Vivobook S 15 is available for preorder today at a starting price of $1,299 and won't ship until June 18. For the money, you'll be able to configure up to 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage

Based on [2], it is claimed that the performance of PCs based on a processor Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus from the list above is superior to the MacBook Air M3.

X86 (Intel/AMD) architecture

At this very moment (see [5]), none of the Intel/AMD chips can meet the Copilot+PC requirement of 40TOPS. Intel's Meteor Lake-based Core Ultra NPUs get at 10 TOPS, and some AMD's Ryzen 7000 and Ryzen 8000 processors with NPUs get between 12-16 TOPS. But, there are some good news:

  • Based on [6], a new generation of processors will be released soon: Intel's next-generation processors, codenamed Lunar Lake, will be released in Q3 2024
  • They are expected to have 45+ TOPS NPU, with details of performance published later
  • Intel expects to sell "more than 40 million" AI PCs in 2024.
