ChatGPT is now accessible through your landline phone. You can call 1-800-242-8478 (1-800-CHATGPT) and talk to OpenAI’s AI assistant. This service launched on Wednesday afternoon, bringing the power of AI to phones in a new way.

Kevin Weil, the Chief Product Officer at OpenAI, explained during a livestream that OpenAI’s mission is to make artificial general intelligence (AGI) beneficial for everyone. To achieve this, they are working to make AI more accessible to people everywhere. By bringing ChatGPT to your landline, OpenAI is taking another step in that direction.

The experience is similar to OpenAI’s “Advanced Voice Mode,” which is already available in ChatGPT. When you call the number, ChatGPT can have conversations with you and answer your questions. It can even help with tasks like translating a sentence into another language. However, the landline version doesn’t support things like images or videos. It’s just voice-based interaction.

OpenAI is offering a generous 15 minutes of free calling for U.S. users. After that, the call will end. Keep in mind that standard carrier fees might apply, depending on your phone plan.

In addition to landlines, ChatGPT is also now available on WhatsApp, so if you prefer texting over calling, you can chat with the AI assistant there as well. The WhatsApp version allows basic back-and-forth conversations with ChatGPT. However, it doesn’t have the same customization options as the official ChatGPT app.

You don’t need an account to use ChatGPT on WhatsApp. However, there is a daily limit to how much you can chat. Once you hit the limit, you’ll be notified and can continue chatting by downloading the official ChatGPT app or using it on your desktop.

OpenAI is working on adding more features to the WhatsApp version, including image analysis and web search. However, they didn’t specify when these new features will be available.
