Apple Unveils Major SwiftUI and Design Upgrades for 2025

SwiftUI

Apple has raised the bar for app development with the latest enhancements to SwiftUI, introduced at WWDC 2025. The new features empower developers to create visually stunning, interactive, and accessible applications across all Apple platforms—ushering in a new era of unified, immersive design.

Revolutionizing App Aesthetics with Liquid Glass

One of the most striking updates is the debut of Apple’s Liquid Glass design language. This dynamic material brings a sense of depth and fluidity to apps, refracting background content and reflecting ambient light for a sophisticated, lens-like effect. The new design philosophy is not just about aesthetics—it’s engineered to focus user attention on content while maintaining navigational clarity. Key UI elements like tab bars and sidebars are now more adaptive and visually engaging, shrinking or expanding fluidly as users interact with content.

Liquid Glass extends across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS, creating a cohesive visual experience. On the Mac, for example, the Dock and menu bar now feature multiple layers of Liquid Glass, allowing for greater personalization and a sense of spaciousness on the desktop.

SwiftUI: Powerful New APIs and Seamless Integration

The latest SwiftUI update introduces a suite of APIs that make it easier than ever to adopt Apple’s new design system.

Developers can now:

Effortlessly bring widgets to visionOS and CarPlay, ensuring a consistent experience across devices.
Take advantage of accented rendering modes to make widgets and controls stand out.
Enable rich text editing in text views, opening the door to advanced document and note-taking apps.
Build custom controls that directly manipulate editor content, offering users a more interactive experience.

A key highlight is the ability to blend SwiftUI with RealityKit, allowing developers to create immersive 3D interfaces and experiences. The new 3D SwiftUI views and spatial layout APIs empower creators to design apps that transition seamlessly from traditional 2D layouts into fully interactive 3D environments, especially impactful for visionOS and spatial computing.

SwiftUI on visionOS: Expanding into Immersive Spaces

With visionOS support, SwiftUI now enables developers to enhance windows, volumes, and immersive spaces. The spatial layout system supports advanced animations, resizing, and state management, making it possible to build sophisticated 3D apps using familiar 2D tools. This integration with RealityKit means developers can craft experiences that are both visually rich and deeply interactive, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on Apple’s newest platforms.

Swift Charts: Data Visualization Enters the Third Dimension

Swift Charts has evolved to support 3D data visualization, powered by RealityKit. Developers can now present data in interactive, three-dimensional charts, making analytics and insights more engaging and intuitive for users. This leap forward allows for deeper exploration and understanding of complex datasets within apps.

WebKit for SwiftUI: Effortless Web Content Integration

The new WebKit APIs for SwiftUI streamline the process of embedding web content directly into apps. Highlights include:

Real-time monitoring of navigation events, such as page loads and redirects, using the Observations API.
Enhanced customization of web views, including scroll behavior and accessibility features.
Direct communication with web page HTML via JavaScript, and flexible navigation policies for handling external links.

These improvements make it easier for developers to create seamless, interactive web experiences within their SwiftUI apps, enhancing both usability and accessibility.

Performance, Accessibility, and Developer Productivity

Apple’s updates also focus on performance and inclusivity. Enhanced animation capabilities, new accessibility features, and improved support for dynamic text and contrast adjustments ensure that apps are not only beautiful but also usable by everyone. The integration of new performance metrics tools and streamlined data management with Swift Data further boosts developer productivity and app responsiveness.

A Unified Future for Apple App Development

With these advancements, Apple is setting a new standard for app design and user experience. The combination of Liquid Glass, expanded SwiftUI capabilities, and seamless integration with RealityKit and WebKit positions developers to build the next generation of immersive, accessible, and high-performing applications, delighting users across the entire Apple ecosystem.
