The Visa Value Added Services Product Development (VAS PD) team is seeking a Staff Database Engineer to join our innovative, fast-paced, and collaborative environment. As a key member of the team, you will play a critical role in designing, developing, and optimizing databases that power payment processing and client-facing applications. You will be responsible for driving technical excellence, ensuring high availability, and leading key database engineering initiatives while mentoring talented team members.

Key Responsibilities

Database Architecture & Development

• Architect, develop and maintain Oracle and MS SQL databases in high SLA environments to support payment processing and client applications.
• Design logical and physical database models to meet business requirements, ensuring scalability and performance for Very Large Databases (VLDBs).
• Drive the migration of Oracle databases to MS SQL Server, implementing best practices and ensuring a smooth transition.

High Availability & Disaster Recovery

• Develop and implement active-active configurations at the database layer for enhanced reliability and scalability.
• Design and manage disaster recovery solutions and database replication, ensuring minimal downtime and robust business continuity.

Performance Optimization & Code Quality

• Write and review high-quality T-SQL and PL/SQL code with a focus on performance and maintainability.
• Proactively analyze and resolve performance bottlenecks, ensuring databases meet stringent performance targets.
• Conduct code reviews and mentor junior team members to uphold best practices in database engineering.

Automation & Tools Development

• Lead the automation of database deployment and management processes using tools like CI/CD pipelines and Redgate.
• Engage in proof-of-concept projects for new SQL Server features, advocating for adoption where beneficial.

Collaboration & Support

• Collaborate closely with application teams, DBAs, and other stakeholders to ensure seamless delivery of database services.
• Provide technical leadership during P1/P2 database incidents, addressing critical issues with urgency and expertise.
• Address vulnerabilities and audit findings reported by the DBA team to maintain compliance and security standards.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

• 5+ years of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree or 2+ years of experience with an advanced degree (Master’s, MBA, etc.).
• Alternatively, 8+ years of professional experience in database engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

• 6+ years of experience with a Bachelor’s degree or 4+ years with an advanced degree.
• In-depth experience with SQL Server 2019 and SQL Server 2022, including active-active configurations and high-availability features.
• Proficiency in T-SQL, PL/SQL, and database performance tuning.
• Strong expertise in designing and implementing disaster recovery and replication solutions.
• Hands-on experience with database automation tools, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment processes.
• Demonstrated ability to manage risks and influence senior leadership with data-driven insights.
• Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills, with a proven ability to lead cross-functional teams.
• Experience working in Agile environments with strong release management practices.
