We are launching a new development center in India, and we're seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join our Payment Platform team. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a founding team that will play a crucial role in shaping our culture and building impactful products from the ground up. You’ll help design and implement scalable payment solutions that support our global learners and enterprise customers.

Key Responsibilities

1. Design & Development. Create and maintain robust payment integration solutions using Java and related technologies.
2. Collaboration. Work closely with product managers and stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical specifications.
3. Integration. Connect third-party payment gateways, APIs, and SDKs, ensuring seamless performance and compatibility.
4. Innovation. Stay current with payment technology trends and suggest improvements for our systems.
5. Documentation. Write and review technical documentation to ensure high-quality, up-to-date knowledge for the team.
6. Quality Assurance. Develop and deploy high-quality code, following best practices and tracking key service level indicators (SLIs).
7. Problem-Solving. Debug production issues, lead retrospectives, and participate in on-call rotations to meet service level agreements (SLAs).
8. Leadership. Mentor team members and contribute to a strong engineering culture.

Basic Qualifications

• 8+ years in backend software engineering, with a track record of solving complex business problems.
• Proficient in designing distributed systems, APIs, and automated tests.
• Expertise in building scalable micro-services and storage solutions using Java, Play/Scala, MySQL, ElasticSearch, Kafka, and cloud services.
• Strong data-driven mindset, with experience in technical research and metrics analysis.
• Proven ability to mentor, grow teams, and establish strong engineering practices.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with payment integrations (e.g., PayPal, Stripe, Braintree) and industry standards (e.g., PCI DSS, PSD2).
• Familiarity with Google Pay (GPay) and In-App Purchases (IAPs).
• Demonstrated ability to deliver results in dynamic environments and influence teams with or without formal authority.
• Proven success in collaborating with cross-functional teams to achieve significant business impact.
