Job Description

As a Principal Data Scientist, you will be at the forefront of our AI initiatives in the realms of physics and chemistry. This role requires a strategic thinker with a strong technical foundation, capable of leading projects that bridge scientific research and practical applications. You will work closely with engineers, customers, and partners, driving impactful solutions that enhance our offerings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee data science projects that align with customer and business needs, ensuring delivery of high-value solutions.
  • Develop frameworks for evaluating project outcomes and implementing best practices in data science methodologies.
  • Identify and leverage cutting-edge AI techniques, such as Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) and deep-learning surrogates, to address complex scientific challenges.
  • Ensure ethical considerations in AI practices while developing robust machine learning models tailored to specific applications in physics and chemistry.
  • Oversee the selection and evaluation of modeling techniques, ensuring alignment with desired project goals and customer expectations.
  • Implement iterative review processes to refine models based on performance metrics and stakeholder feedback.
  • Act as a subject matter expert, regularly presenting at conferences and industry events to share insights and drive discussions on data science advancements in the sciences.
  • Foster relationships with academic and industry leaders to identify emerging trends and opportunities for collaboration.
  • Lead cross-functional teams in integrating diverse data sources and troubleshooting complex data issues.
  • Innovate new methodologies for building scalable solutions that address specific business challenges, enhancing operational efficiency.
  • Define and align business, customer, and solution strategy goals, driving initiatives that enhance Microsoft's competitive edge in the AI landscape.
  • Collaborate with teams across Microsoft to explore and capitalize on opportunities for novel AI applications, fostering a culture of innovation and teamwork.
  • Build strong relationships with customers, understanding their unique challenges and providing actionable insights and solutions.
  • Act as a trusted advisor, guiding customers through complex decisions related to AI adoption and implementation.

Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Physics, Material Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field, along with 8+ years of applied data science experience in relevant domains.
  • Master’s Degree with 10+ years of data science experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree with 12+ years of data science experience.

Equivalent experience

  • Doctorate with 10+ years of relevant experience or Master’s with 12+ years.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage geographically diverse teams, facilitating collaboration across different time zones and cultures.
  • Proven experience in engaging with customers and stakeholders to develop tailored solutions that meet specific business needs.
