Job Description

The Data Center Engineer, or Hands & Feet Engineer, is integral to the efficient operation of data centers. This role involves hands-on management of hardware and infrastructure within data centers, ensuring smooth and reliable IT operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform physical installation of servers, network devices, and other hardware.
  • Configure and maintain hardware to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Organize and manage network cabling systems in compliance with industry standards.
  • Ensure proper cabling practices to facilitate effective and efficient data transmission.
  • Install and arrange equipment within server racks, maintaining an organized and accessible setup.
  • Ensure that all equipment is properly secured and configured.
  • Identify and resolve hardware malfunctions or connectivity issues.
  • Implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence of issues.
  • Deploy new hardware and infrastructure components as per project specifications.
  • Validate that deployments meet technical and operational requirements.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of hardware inventory, configurations, and changes.
  • Create reports to track equipment status and manage lifecycle.
  • Work closely with network engineers, system administrators, and other IT professionals to address infrastructure needs.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to collaborative problem-solving.
  • Implement and enforce physical security measures to protect data center assets.
  • Monitor and control access to data center facilities.
  • Maintain a comprehensive database of vendor details including contacts, escalation matrices, and service commitments.
  • Coordinate with vendors for support and updates, ensuring adherence to service level agreements (SLAs).

Working Conditions

  1. Environment. Exposure to noisy environments and varying temperatures typical of data centers.
  2. Flexibility. Ability to work outside of regular business hours as required for maintenance or urgent issues.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • 2-5 years of hands-on experience in hardware installation, maintenance, and infrastructure management.
  • Familiarity with network cabling standards and practices.
  • Basic understanding of network protocols and configurations.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Capability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Certifications: Relevant certifications in IT infrastructure or related fields are advantageous.
