what is visual studio 2010

hello, this question is not technical but simple and general in nature.

I wish to know what is visual studio ? how it was developed and who are the people using this platform and why?Also it will be great if know get to know what is .net and how it is linked with visual studio.

I am expecting such question from people evaluating my work.
