What is best and latest approach by web developer at mnc

Currently am developing and web application and i want to make as effient as well in the term of resources it will use in asp.net either by webforms or in MVC.When ever i am fetching data from my MS Sql Db what would be best approach to have it in Collections like List and many more or i should fetch it in datatable or dataset.Tell me about what mnc developers are using currently
