Timer jobs in sharepoint and timer services

Question

Hi guys,

I looked over the net to get a good description for timer jobs. Can anyone give me some idea as to why do we use timer jobs and how they work. What actually happens when a timer job executes and what stuff all can  we do with timer jobs.
