Something like adding a value to an area of an image

Question

If you have a floorplan, showing all the rooms. Is there a way to click on one of the rooms, and then use that value to display data about that room retrieved from a database. Obviously I need to do something about that image first, like drawing a transparent rectangle and giving this a value, but I have no idea how to do this. Can anyone help? Thanks.
