Already covered by multiple people below. But here just to explain using web terms. Web applications using http/s protocol for communication. This protocol is stateless and so won't keep the data state between submissions. So you need to manually keep the data state in between submissions. Session is one of the methods for it. Windows/Desktop application don't need it as it keeps its state by default.
