Program Update Function

Question

I have recently written a program that is almost ready to be released. I am looking into differant ways to update it and am not sure at the best way to do so. In VS .NET 2005 I know you can publish you program to a location and have you application update in that manner but I decided that I don't like exactly how it works. I have also thought about updating by checking an XML file located on the web. This method seems like it might be best but would like to know if there are any other methods that may be better.
