pictures dont display

Question

I am a beginner to asp.net. Could someone explain why my pictures dont show up, they are in the app_data folder therefore i can use intellisense. When i place them in a directory outside of the application they show up fine in IE but still dont display in any of the other browsers. Any help much appreciated.
