Open Source Projects

Question

I'm looking to get some additional practice via "Open Source Projects." Any of you out there have any good websites I can visit to get involved in some of these open source projects?  Also, would open source projects help a newbie like me?  I heard about "Top Coder" and am currently looking for other sites. Thanks in advance!
