Is .Net platform Independent? Can any one explain that?

Mono is not .Net. Mono is an "implementation of C# and the CLR that is binary compatible with Microsoft.NET"; see the Mono Project web site. .Net is Microsoft's implementation of the Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) . The CLI is designed for platform independence just as the Java Virtual Machine is. Also the CLI is a subset of .Net.

.Net platform is dependent on Microsoft OS. But it provides an independent platform for different languages.On .net Platform we can use several languages but self .net platform is dependent. Basically .Net platform understands only one language MSIL or IL. Here MSIL is platform independent it is similar to JAVA Bycte code. Then CLR generate a platform dependent code that executes processor, But if you want run your .NET application on LINUX then use MONO tool .

.NET is only platform independent to the extent that a version of the CLR, a CIL language compiler and (at least) the base class libraries is available for that platform. The language compiler can then produce CIL which the CLR's just-in-time compiler converts to native code for that platform at runtime. In practice, this means that .NET only runs on Windows platforms except as noted below: 1. In an ASP.NET application, .NET can run on the server and generate DHTML that can be rendered on a browser on non-Windows platforms. 2. Silverlight applications can run on Mac OS X as well as Windows. 3. Although it's not strictly the same as .NET, there are versions of it (notably Mono) which can produce applications which run on a variety of platforms such as Linux, Unix, Solaris and Mac OS X.

jegath, it depends on case, .net is platform independent as long as the platform is .NET, the same way that Java is platform independent as long as the platform is Java.

In case we say .Net is platform dependent but .Net is platform independent also because .net provide the concept of MSIL(Microsoft Intermediet Language) when f/w convert the code written in .Net into MSIL that code can be used on any platform that's why .Net is platform independent also.
