Is it normalization will reduce performance?

Question

I heard database performance will be down by using normalization from my friend. I known only advatages tillnow , by using it we can reduce the redundency of data in database.Even codd also specified abt normalization power in his 12 rules.however i didn't get disadvatages of normalization. can anybody give disadvages of normalization and also why it reduces performance.
