How to use C# code to connect to external device(connected to PC by USB) and retrieve its stored data?

HI all i have been given an assignment that is due a few weeks later and wad i have to do is to retrieve a set of data stored in a "Offed" device and save it into my database in the PC. i could also view the data log using gridview. But i really need to know is how to connect to the device using C# code and retrieve stored data readings from it. does anyone have some sample code or skeleton code i could use?
