Sam Altman was fired by the board of OpenAI, joined Microsoft, and later rehired by OpenAI. I was curious if it was due to the ethical use and advancement of AI that could harm humanity.
There is a report by Reuters that some researchers at OpenAI warned the board of directors about a powerful AI breakthrough that could pose a threat to humanity before Altman was fired. The researchers said they had created an AI system that could generate realistic text and images on any topic without human supervision. The system, dubbed DALL-E, was publicly unveiled in January, but the researchers said they had withheld some of its capabilities due to ethical concerns. Altman, who was ousted from OpenAI, has denied any wrongdoing and said he was proud of the work done by the lab.
The research firm said that these tensions likely resulted in frustrating communications and Altman making some operational decisions without keeping the board fully aware. The board said in a statement that Altman was “not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities.”
Was Sam trying to slow down the innovation and build some guard rails around it? Was the board pushing new innovation faster?
Is it possible that OpenAI is moving too fast in the advancement of AI, which could pose a potential threat to humanity?
What is your thought on the evolution of AI and the threat it poses to humanity?
