I'm going to make College Database Management System as my final year project.

I'm very new to C# and i'm going to develop my project as Desktop Application.

can experts give me suggestions on Databases and suggestions on designing UI simple and elegant ?? 

And also please suggest me some good books on UI designing and about using Databases with C# ?
