dropdownlist binding in mvc by selectlistitem or selectlist?

I am getting lot of confusion between selectlistitem and selectlist.

I have seen lot of articles for binding items to dropdownlist.

some of the articles had done by selectlistitem and some are by selectlist.

Please explain what is the best way of populating items to dropdownlist from database in MVC?
