Does OWIN mandatory for Token based Authentication?

Question

I saw many example for Token based authentication implemented with OWIN. As per my understanding with OWIN is that to add one more layer between web server and application to remove the web server dependency and it has nothing to do with Token based Authentication. Do you think that for Token based Authentication we need to always go with OWIN?
