Difference between senior associate and Sr.software engineer

I am confused about the term senior associate. Why some companies use senior associate in place of senior software engineer. What is the difference in these terms.

 The levels will be like

 Associate

Senior Associate

Manager

Senior Manager.

 etc...

 

What is the basic funda of this associate term not engineer.
