DATABASE CONNECTIVITY IN C# AND SILVERLIGHT WITH ORACLE EXPRESS 10G DATABASE

Feb 27 2010 8:10 AM
PROBLEMS IN DATABSE CONNECTIVITY IN C#.
TO DESCRIBE IN DETAIL IT WOULD BE LIKE:

PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE:C#-VISUAL STUDIO 2008
DATABASE :ORACLE EXPRESS 10g
FRONT END:microsoft silverlight

WE HAVE COMPLETED THE NORMALIZATION OF THE DATABASE AND ALSO DESIGN OF THE SCREENS IN silverlight.NOW WE WANT TO CONNECT TO THE ORACLE DATABASE WHICH CONSISTS OF 4 TABLES.

IN CONNECTIVTY WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW AS TO HOW TO ACCESS THE DATABASE FROM C# AND ASP.NET? THIS WOULD MEAN WE WANT TO ENTER DATA IN SILVERLIGHTFORMS AND WANT THE DATA TO BE INSERTED INTO THE DATABASE. BUT,WE DO NOT KNOW HOW TO START WRITING THE CONNECTION STRING FOR THE SAME IN C#.

BUT FOR TRIAL WE FIRST TRIED IT OUT WITH THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE:
1.IN SOLUTION EXPLORER ->RIGHT CLICK ON WEB APPLICATION->ADD REFERENCE->ORACLECLIENT.DLL FILE IS SELECTED.
2.IN TOOLS MENU WHEN WE TRY TO CONNECT TO A DATABSE A POP WINDOW OCCURS SAYING TO ENTER"SERVER NAME","USER NAME" AND "PASSWORD" FOR THE DATABASE.WE ENTERED THE LOCALHOST'S(1 LAPTOP USED BOTH AS A CLIENT AND A SERVER) NAME AS THE SERVER NAME.
3.THEN WHEN WE CLICKED ON"TEST CONNECTION" IT RETURNED "TEST CONNECTION SUCCEEDED"
4.AND IN THE SERVER EXPLORER WE WERE ABLE TO SEE ALL OUR TABLES.

I WANT TO ASK WHETHER THE ABOVE PROCEDURE IS CORRECT? IF NO ,WE SINCERELY REQEST YOU TO GIVE US/FORWARD US (IF POSSIBLE) SOME HINTS IN THE FORM OF(WEB PAGE LINKS,PAPERS,CODE SNIPPETS) FOR THE SAME.
ALONG WITH IT IT WOULD BE REALY NICE TO HEAR FROM YOU AS TO HOW TO START WRITING A CONNECTION STRING IN C#.

ONE LAST POINT TO DISCUSS IS WE ARE ALSO NOT GETTING AS TO WHAT REFERENCE SHOULD WE ADD.MEANING(OLEDB /ODBC) OR USE ODP.NET WHAT IS THE ACTUAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM? AND WHAT IS SUITABLE OR FEASIBLE IN THIS CASE?BECAUSE FOR EACH OF THE ABOVE CASES WE HAVE TO ADD A NEW REFERENCE AND WE GET STUCK UPON THAT PART.
IT WOULD BE REALLY HELPFULL IF IT ISD POSSIBLE FOR YOU TO EXPLAIN THE DATABASE  CONNECTIVITY IN DETAIL(IF POSSIBLE) WITH THE ABOVE DETAILS.
