Converting address to lattitude and longitude

Question

I'm doing a project and have already integrated googlemaps into my website but it takes lattitude and longitude co-ordinates, so i need to know what to use and how to use it. if your'l possibly provide me with an example it will be highly appreciated. plus need to know how to mark routes from point to point.
