Check if a list item exists in SharePoint using javaScript

Question

I want to check if item exist in list before i update . If it exist in the sharePoint List don`t update but else it don`t exist in Sharepoint List update the Sharepoint List.

 

I am using API Jquery/Javascript ( _api/web/list   )

 

Any Javascript example i can use. we be appriciented . Thanks
