Chat application in c#.net

How can i develop a chat application to be used over the internet using the HTTP ( a windows aplication using c#.net) ? Should i go for external messaging servers like Jabber ? Can i get an idea about the architecture or the logic behind chatting when the clients chat behind firewalls and proxy servers?
