Probably you get an error message like : "Cannot implicitly convert from int to byte...are you missing a cast?" or something like that (I'm not having VS in front of me right now). Try: byte a=10b; //or byte a=(byte)10; I think one of this should work.

1 + 1 returns a number 2 of type int. You have to specify explicitly that the number you typed is a byte or short... (byte)(1+1) works. 1b + 1b might also work if the b suffix works like it does for doubles and floats.

I doubt it says it says it can only calculate with int. What is the exact error message? I guess you have mixed two different datatypes and it gives a warning (or error if these's no implicit type cast defined)
