best approach to save items in Shopping card

Question

I would like to make a E-Commerce website
one important function is the shopping card.

How can I make sure a user keeps there items in there shopping card/bag

while they go from link to link.

I was thinking about Creating a Cookie.
But i dont know if that is the best approach?
