Iterative vs. LINQ Approach in .NET

Introduction

When working with collections of objects in C#, you may often need to transform or map the items from one list to another. This process is a common task in software development, and C# offers two primary methods to achieve it: the Iterative approach and the LINQ (Language-Integrated Query) approach. In this blog post, we will explore both methods and discuss their use cases.

The Iterative Approach

The iterative approach is a traditional and straightforward way to map one list of objects to another. It involves iterating through the source list and creating new objects for the destination list by manually copying values from the source to the destination.

The source code can be downloaded from the GitHub.

Consider the following example with two classes, SourceObject and DestinationObject.

class SourceObject
{
    public int Id { get; set; }
    public string Name { get; set; }
}

class DestinationObject
{
    public int Id { get; set; }
    public string DisplayName { get; set; }
}

Here's how you can use the iterative approach to map a list of SourceObject instances to a list of DestinationObject instances.

public void IterativeApproach()
{
    List<SourceObject> sourceList = GetSourceList();
    List<DestinationObject> destinationList = new List<DestinationObject>();

    foreach (var sourceObject in sourceList)
    {
        var destinationObject = new DestinationObject
        {
            Id = sourceObject.Id,
            DisplayName = "Display " + sourceObject.Name // Perform any mapping here
        };
        destinationList.Add(destinationObject);
    }
}

private List<SourceObject> GetSourceList()
{
    return new List<SourceObject>
    {
        new SourceObject { Id = 1, Name = "Object 1" },
        new SourceObject { Id = 2, Name = "Object 2" },
        new SourceObject { Id = 3, Name = "Object 3" },
        new SourceObject { Id = 4, Name = "Object 4" },
        new SourceObject { Id = 5, Name = "Object 5" },
        new SourceObject { Id = 6, Name = "Object 6" },
        new SourceObject { Id = 7, Name = "Object 7" }
        // Additional items could be added here
    };
}

The iterative approach is explicit and gives you fine-grained control over the mapping process. However, it can be more verbose and error-prone, especially for complex object structures.

The LINQ Approach

LINQ is a powerful and expressive feature of C# that simplifies working with collections. It provides a concise and elegant way to map one list to another. Here's how you can achieve the same mapping using LINQ.

public void LinqApproach()
{
    List<SourceObject> sourceList = GetSourceList();
    List<DestinationObject> destinationList = sourceList.Select(sourceObject => new DestinationObject
    {
        Id = sourceObject.Id,
        DisplayName = "Display " + sourceObject.Name // Perform any mapping here
    }).ToList();
}

This method, in a practical scenario, could be replaced with actual data retrieval logic from a database, an API call, or any other data source to obtain a list of SourceObject instances. It abstracts away the specifics of how the source list is obtained for the purpose of illustrating the mapping approaches using different datasets.

In this code, the Select method is used to project each element of the sourceList into a new DestinationObject. Inside the Select method, you can specify how the mapping should occur. The LINQ approach is concise, readable, and leverages the power of the language for transforming data.

Use Cases

So, when should you use the iterative approach, and when should you opt for LINQ? Here are some guidelines.

Use of Iterative Approach

You need fine-grained control over the mapping process.
You are working with complex object structures and require custom logic for mapping.
You want to keep the code more explicit.

Use of LINQ Approach

Your mapping is straightforward and doesn't require complex logic.
You want to write more concise and expressive code.
You prefer a functional programming style for mapping data.

Benchmarking

Benchmarking code performance is crucial when choosing between different approaches for an operation. In this case, let's set up a simple benchmark to compare the performance of the iterative and LINQ approaches for mapping one list of objects to another. We'll use the Benchmark.NET library to perform the benchmarking. If you haven't already, you'll need to install the Benchmark.NET NuGet package.

List Mapping

Based on the benchmark results, the LINQ Approach shows significantly better performance in terms of speed and consistency when mapping one list of objects to another. It performs the mapping operation faster and with less variability in execution times compared to the traditional Iterative Approach. As a result, the LINQ Approach might be the preferred method for mapping lists in terms of performance efficiency.

Conclusion

Both the iterative and LINQ approaches have their place in C# development. The choice between them depends on the specific requirements of your project and your coding style preferences. By understanding both methods, you can choose the one that best fits your needs and enhances your productivity.

Happy coding!
