In this article we are going to learn how to extend a content database for a single web application using SharePoint 2010 User Interface.
A single web application contain at least one content database, in case we need to add more content in SharePoint we need to extend (add) new content database and attach to the existing web application. Here some steps to be follow to add new content database to the existing web application.
Step 1
Go to the Central Administration -> application management ->Manage content database
Step 2
Choose the web application from the top right panel, here you can see how many content database consuming your current web application.
Step 3
Click the previous database name and you can see the below window and put the database status to offline and hit ok
Step 4
Click add a content database from top left panel, then you can see the below window.
Note: Here make sure you have chosen the correct web application and database server. Give a name for the new content database and authentication and click ok.
Step 5
Now new database has created successfully, but need to check whether the new content has been placing in new content DB. Put the previous database to ready mode.
Step 6
Create a new site collection to check weather site getting place in new content database.
Note: Make sure your previous content database should be ready mode
