Only the right tools help you achieve that extra
mileage in hunting a job. But the process, the job interviews tend to
scare the hell out of us.
Quantifying the achievements is the first thing that
comes to mind when it comes to appearing for an interview. Idea may be right
but the presentation matters the most.
Surveys tell us, recruiters, largely, spend
approximately six seconds on scanning a resume. Hence a resume overloaded with information
has more chances of getting overlooked.
If the resume does not get selected then even the best
probable employee does not get a chance to appear for the interview.
Career Expert Amanda Augustine
says, “The key is to format the information in a way that makes it easy to scan
and recognize your job goals and relevant qualifications,”
Key is to put forward your best foot. And getting the
resume shortlisted is the biggest hurdle that a candidate needs to get past.
Here are some useful tips for your consideration:
- Help
the recruiter by formatting your information in such a way that it identifies
both your significant education and the job objectives
- Utilize
the resume space smartly and avoid obvious statements. According to Augustine
an executive summary should be used instead of the fluffy statements. She says,
"In approximately three to five sentences, explain what you're great at,
most interested in, and how you can provide value to a prospective
employer,".
- It
would be wise to mention your major contributions and achievements, in each
role - in each organization. Use this piece of information (at the relevant
rounds and scopes) all through the process till not you find success in your
job hunting.
- Don't
lack on your research. Interview nightmares won't scare you as much if you have
done all your homework and are fully prepared.
The process may be exhausting but if you walk that
extra mile you could easily reach at the top of it.
Right overall attitude and a resume with the right
ingredients in the right proportions act more favorably for you.
Create a resume that is informative but most
importantly is concise. Try and magnify your achievements without going
overboard.
