What is Site Column You often create columns directly in your SharePoint List or Library. But this column is different from SharePoint Site Columns. When you create a column inside List or Library, this column scope is limited to that particular List or Library. If you need the same column in another List or Library you will have to create again the same column for that List or Library. Here Site Columns comes in picture. Site Column provides reusable columns within Site Collection. In short Site Column belongs to all Lists and Libraries within site collection. Many site columns come with site Template when you create site collection. Still we need columns that are not available. Note: Site Column essentially uses in Content Types. Site Columns can be access across the site collections when you create Content Type Hub. We will discuss this in another blog. Let’s create site column. Gearbox-Site settings-Site columns(In Web Designer Galleries)-Create. I am creating VendorName Column of Single line of texttype. You can choose any one it depends upon your requirement. In Group I am using New groupand I named it My custom columns. Leave all fields as default and click Ok. Now let’s use this site column. Add new Custom List name it Vendor. Add VendorName site column to this Vendor List. Go to Vendor List-List-List Settings-Add from existing site columns-Choose My custom columns (In All Groups)-Add VendorName (From Available site columns to Columns to add)-Ok Now you can verify VendorName added in Vendor List. Let’s check reusability of VendorName site column. Create New Document Library and name it Company Vendor. Let’s Add same VendorName site columns to Company Vendor Library.Click to Company VendorLibrary-Library-Library Settings-Add from existing site columns-Choose My custom columns (In Select site columns from:)- Add VendorName (From Available sites columns to Columns to add) -Ok Verify your Company Vendor Library. Conclusion: Site Columns are reusable columns that can be used within site collection. If you create site columns in Content Type Hub it can be used across the site collections.
